Joe Craib
Director. Producer. Writer
I am a Toronto-based filmmaker who works as a director, producer, writer and assistant director. A graduate of Queen’s University in 2016, my work as a freelancer through the years has taken me from production assistant and transport work, to grip and electric departments, to consistently working as a first assistant director since 2021 – including on multiple feature films, commercials, series and shorts. The perspectives I have gained from these varied roles have greatly informed my approach to my ultimate passion – writing and directing narrative films. I actively pursue creating characters and stories that reflect the diverse and complex nature of Canada today, especially for young people. My filmography spans the genres of horror, comedy, speculative fiction, and social drama.
I am a producer under the banner of Start The Picture. I am dedicated to bringing work to the screen that explores unique perspectives, deals with complex characters, pushes the boundaries of genre and takes risks in storytelling. Short films I have produced have screened at the Kingston Canadian Film Festival, Toronto Shorts International Film Festival, Rocky Mountain International Film Festival, and the Macabro Festival in Mexico City. I highly value the collaborative process of working with filmmakers to achieve their visions; assembling a team of like-minded and creative people to make it happen. I take great pride in helping to foster a strong Toronto independent film community.
